The department told WFAA that a man was inside a pipe that washed away.

ARLINGTON, Texas — A worker contracted by Arlington Water Utilities was rescued from a water transmission line, officials said.

According to the Arlington Fire Department, around 9 a.m. Monday, March 20, crews responded to a call about a contract worker trapped inside a pipe at the Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant in the 1900 block of Lakewood Drive.

Arlington FD said the caller said the worker, who is with Archer Wester LLC, was inside a pipe with a 54-inch diameter and was trapped inside.

Crews got to the scene, then requested help from the Arlington Fire Department's Special Operations Team and the Dive/Swift Water Team.

When the Special Operations Team arrived, they said the trapped worker's arm was caught when a safety device known as a plug moved unexpectedly. The water transmission line, which is buried about six feet deep, had been drained of water for a pipe section replacement project, officials said.

At about 10 a.m., WFAA was on the scene the moment the worker was pulled from the line and was transported to a local hospital. The City of Arlington said the worker was taken to an area hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

“We are thankful for the quick action from Archer Western and the City of Arlington Fire Department in preventing further injury. Our thoughts are with the employee involved in this accident and his family,” Arlington Water Utilities Director Craig M. Cummings said.

“The safety of employees at Arlington Water Utilities facilities, whether they are City employees or those working for a private company, is our highest priority. We will support Archer Western as the company completes post-accident safety reviews.”

The Pierce-Burch Water Treatment Plant, one of Arlington's two water treatment plants, is currently being renovated -- including the replacement of many 20-foot section of a 54-inch main used to send water form the plant the city's water distribution system, officials said.

The plant is offline during the winter months and is not currently treating water.

Arlington Renegades Head Coach Bob Stoops spoke to the media Wednesday regarding recent transactions as well as their upcoming game against the San Antonio Brahmas.

It has been a busy Wednesday for the team as they look for a spark on offense. They announced on Twitter the signing of wide receiver Victor Bolden and running back Brian Herrien. The team also announced that running back Kenneth Farrow was placed on injured reserve with an ACL injury. Lastly, Arlington announced wide receiver Jordan Smallwood was waived from the team.

Bolden made a name for himself as one of the best players in the USFL where he played for the Birmingham Stallions in 2022. He led the league in total yards with 1,209 yards and one touchdown in the regular season. During the championship game, Bolden was named the MVP of the game as he caught six passes for 64 yards and one touchdown and had a 43-yard kickoff return as well. He ended the season with an All-USFL selection for his performance in the season.

In the NFL this past season, Bolden started with a stint in Arizona with the Cardinals before being released by the team in September. He most recently was on the Denver Broncos practice squad but was waived by the team last Tuesday. Coach Stoops spoke about what went into the move with Bolden and Smallwood.

“Just a guy that’s got really great speed, different style of player. Jordan (Smallwood) was awesome and a great leader for us. I think getting a little more speed on the field helps.”

Going into the regular season, Smallwood came in as the starting wide receiver for the team and even received praise from coach Stoops for his performance during training camp. In five games with the Renegades, Smallwood caught three passes for 33 yards. Coach Stoops spoke highly of Smallwood and the impact he had on the team.

Herrien comes in to replace Farrow after he was placed on the injured reserve list. During four seasons at Georgia from 2016 through 2019, Harrien rushed for 1,413 yards and 13 touchdowns along with 28 catches for 167 receiving yards and two touchdowns. His most recent stop was with the DC Defenders in training camp before being waived by the team.

One story that fans have been watching is about linebacker Willie Taylor. What makes Taylor’s story so interesting is he is one of two players in the XFL that are NFL Draft eligible this year. He has found himself to be a key role player on the defense and starting games in part due to injuries at the position. So far this season, Taylor has recorded 11 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three sacks. Coach Stoops had high praise for Taylor and the impact he has made on the defense for Arlington.

“Yeah, Willie is definitely a guy that the more, I think, confidence and comfortable he becomes in what we’re doing. He’s a really explosive guy that can create some havoc and get to the quarterback and really believe he’s just scratching the surface right now and I think starting to really get comfortable in what the coaches want him to do. And I’m hopeful that he will keep showing up each week.”

The defense has been the name of the game for the Renegades halfway through the season and last week’s game. Taylor played a factor in helping the defense hold San Antonio to under 200 yards and forced three turnovers. Coach Stoops knows how big his defense has come up in games all season and last week.

“Yeah, they played incredibly well. Just all the continuity. We were really strong against the run game, which we always want to be, got to the quarterback, some created turnovers, didn’t give up any big explosive plays. So they’ve been hitting on all cylinders, really. And to have three interceptions in the second half really, definitely helped seal the win for us. Especially then. You look at the last two drives of theirs, we picked them off both times to seal the win.

For the second straight week, the Renegades are preparing to face off against the San Antonio Brahmas. Arlington won 12-10 on Sunday to secure their third win of the season. The win put the team with a comfortable two-game lead in the south division over the 1-4 Brahmas.

“Well, I think everyone analyzes what worked for us, what didn’t. Just try and make those adjustments of things that work for you, find ways to dress them up and use them again. Things that didn’t try and create a few more different ways to attack them either side of the ball with something different. So you just adjust to some degree. You don’t just all of a sudden in the 6th week, all of a sudden start a new offensive defense. So, you make a few wrinkles here and there, but basically it still gets down to making executing plays.”

Another keynote about this week is the question of which quarterback will start. Kyle Sloter improved his performance by throwing just one interception in the win against San Antonio. Coach Stoops last week said Sloter and Drew Plitt could both play in the game depending on how things go. Sloter played the whole game without Plitt stepping on the field. It’ll be another week when coach Stoops will still have the quarterbacks competing for the job.

“Yeah, they’re still the same. They’ll both compete for it all week and how they practice and share reps and see who we feel does the best job.”

The TV Ratings are in for Week 5 of the 2023 XFL Season. The XFL slate of four cable telecasts on FX, ESPN, and ESPN2 stared directly into the eye of the March Madness storm.

Eighteen of XFL 2023’s twenty games have aired on cable, each airing as well on ESPN+. The league’s only two airings on network television ABC averaged over 1.6 million viewers, with a peak of 2.3 million in week one. The XFL finally returns to over-the-air network TV this coming week on ABC. But the league has a lot of competition for eyeballs.

As evidenced by their viewership numbers in Week 5.

Week Five in the XFL kicked off with a late Thursday night game at 10:30 pm ET on ESPN between the Seattle Sea Dragons and the previously unbeaten Houston Roughnecks. The telecast took a beating in viewership, averaging only 256,000 viewers. The game was rated 48th out of 150 Cable TV shows in the 18-49 demographic.

Friday’s coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament were 21 of the top 22 rated Cable TV shows. Across TNT, TBS, and Tru TV.

The first part of a Saturday night doubleheader on FX, which saw the D.C. Defenders top the St. Louis Battlehawks in front of over 35,000 fans at The Dome, averaged 320,000 viewers. The telecast was ranked 50th out of 150 shows on Cable television in the 18-49 viewership demo.

Saturday’s 10 pm ET telecast on FX, which featured two winless teams in the Vegas Vipers and Orlando Guardians, averaged 234,000 viewers. The lowest viewership total for an XFL game this season. The game was ranked 73rd out of 150 cable shows in the top demo.

The final game of Week 5 featured the Arlington Renegades and San Antonio Brahmas on ESPN2. The 9 pm ET telecast averaged 246,000 viewers. The game ranked 71st out of 150 cable tv shows in the 18-49 demo.

Not a pretty week for the league in terms of viewership. Losing casual sports viewers to NCAA and March Madness is an expected outcome. But what didn’t help matters was the odd scheduling by Disney for XFL games. Not only has it hurt attendance in specific markets, and prohibited families from coming to late-night weekday or Sunday games. But it has a direct effect on luring viewers.

By scheduling games that end past 1 am in half the country, you eliminate viewers.

There’s no getting around the fact that the league’s viewership and overall interest in March will take a hit. That’s an expected result. But the optics create the feel of a league struggling to stay relevant.

The XFL is returning to ABC this weekend. Which could help with some added visibility. But the league needs to weather the storm and hope that viewership returns later in the season.

Although it’s in a different part of the calendar, the USFL struggled to get a foothold in viewership on Cable TV last season, by midseason, seeing some games hit under 300,000 viewers. And having over-the-air network telecasts dip into 600k territory. The USFL was able to get to the finish line in decent shape when the smoke cleared.

Can XFL 2023? That remains to be seen.

The XFL returns to a more traditional schedule this coming weekend. With two ABC games in the afternoon Saturday and Sunday. 1 and 3 pm ET respectively. The lone FX telecast takes place Saturday night at 7 pm ET. The Week 6 finale, sees the 4-1 Houston Roughnecks square off against the 5-0 D.C. Defenders, Monday night at 7 pm ET on ESPN2.

Help us re-imagine Meadowbrook Park! The City of Arlington is developing a Master Plan for Meadowbrook Park, Arlington’s first park that opened in 1924.

In advance of the centennial celebration in 2024, Arlington Parks and Recreation has contracted with Kimley-Horn and Associates in the preparation of the master plan, and we are excited to receive your feedback on potential park amenities at one of three scheduled open houses. The first two public meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and March 8 at the Levitt Center at Levitt Pavilion Arlington, 100 W. Abram St. in Downtown. The third public meeting is set for 6 p.m. May 11 at the Meadowbrook Activity Center, 1400 Dugan St.

The existing Meadowbrook Park is approximately 52 acres, inclusive of the park, golf course and Eunice Activity Center. The amenities for the park will be determined by the City, consultant, stakeholder groups, and public through facilitated meetings, illustrated on the concept plan, and programmed into the final document. The scope of work for Kimley-Horn and Associates includes physical site inventory and base map preparation, research history of park, research of comparable facilities, opportunities and constraints diagram, proposed programmatic plan, master plan development, stakeholder/public meetings, cost estimate and phasing diagram, and implementation plan.

The phase-1 development portion of the project includes design with the goal of constructing a physical improvement to the park to coincide with the centennial celebration in 2024. This portion of the work includes preparation of construction documents, bid phase services, and construction contract administration services. Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., was selected to design this project through the annual RFQ process.

Master Plan Public Meeting Details

ARLINGTON, Texas – For the 1,000th time in his coaching career, Baylor softball’s Glenn Moore led his team to a win, as the 20th-ranked Bears posted a 5-0 shutout at UT Arlington on Wednesday morning at Allan Saxe Field.

Moore, in his 26th season as a head coach and his 23rd at Baylor, saw his pitching staff blank the Mavs to improve to 23-5 on the year. It pushed Moore’s win total to 1,000-472, including a 861-430 record leading the Bears.

Moore is the winningest coach in Baylor Athletics history and now ranks 11th among active Division I head softball coaches to reach this milestone.

The performance from the Bears was notable beyond the historic win for Moore, as sophomore first baseman Shaylon Govan – a leading contender for national player of the year – continued a torrid offensive pace with an RBI knock. With injuries hitting the BU pitching staff, Govan stepped up in another role, moving into the circle to pitch for the first time in 2023.

A native of Katy, Texas, she worked the final two innings in the complete-game shutout, scattering one single with a pair of strikeouts. It was Govan’s first pitching performance since 2021 while at Stephen F. Austin, when she worked in six games with three starts, the only pitching outings of her career.

Govan has hit .420 (29-for-69) with four doubles, seven homers and 35 RBI on the year, drawing 21 walks and striking out just nine times.

The Bears controlled the game from the jump, plating three runs in the first inning and adding single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings.

The win extended BU’s win streak to five straight, including a series sweep over Houston last weekend.

UT Arlington (11-14) – who owns wins over No. 16 Kentucky and Texas Tech earlier in the year – saw Jessica Adams (6-7) take the loss after allowing five runs in six innings.

It marked the second shutout win for the Bears over UT Arlington, with BU also blanking UTA 8-0 on Feb. 28 in Waco.

The Bears struck first in the top of the first inning, getting McKenzie Wilson and Amber Toven on via error. With runners on the corners, the Bears executed a double steal to allow Wilson to score the first run of the game. Shaylon Govan then smashed an RBI single into left-centerfield and after she was pinch ran for by Caroline Rowatt, and a sacrifice bunt pushed Rowatt to third with one out, Emily Hott forced home the third run of the game with an RBI groundout.

In the fourth, Ana Watson doubled with one out into the gap, and motored to third on a passed ball. Josie Bower then grounded out up the middle to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.

The Bears made it 5-0 in the sixth, as Sydney Collazos singled into centerfield, and pinch runner Ashlyn Wachtendorf took second on a passed ball. Hott then doubled down the rightfield line, scoring Wachtendorf.

RyLee Crandall and Govan combined on the two-hit shutout, allowing only a pair of singles. Crandall (7-2) earned the win with five one-hit innings, walking one and striking out five. Govan then took over in the sixth with a four-run lead, surrendering a single with two strikeouts.

The Bears collected seven hits in the win, coming from seven different hitters. Hott drove in a pair, with Govan and Bower each notching RBI. Wilson, Toven, Collazos, Watson and Presleigh Pilon each tallied hits.

The win was the last pre-conference tune-up for the red-hot Bears, who venture to Stillwater, Okla., to open a three-game set with No. 2 Oklahoma State on Friday, starting at 6 p.m. The series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m., with the final two games of the series broadcast on ESPN+.
