Today, more than 80% of global shipping involves containers. They're packed with everything from personal storage items in dry containers to heavy machinery on flat rack containers. For business owners shipping products, getting a container from point A to point B requires precise planning and high-level tracking. But that's easier said than done when global supply chains become over-congested, leading to loading time issues and delays.
That's bad news for business owners who are already under a massive amount of stress. The truth is that container storage delays can cripple a business, but there's a viable solution: drayage brokers in Long Beach, CA like RelyEx. Drayage companies provide unique solutions to minimize demurrage and help ensure the successful delivery of your freight.
With more than 30 combined years of experience and a solutions-oriented team, RelyEx has quickly become the first choice for streamlined, efficient drayage services. To understand the true value of RelyEx's offerings in the global logistics industry, it helps to understand first what drayage is and why it's used.
If you're a seasoned business owner who uses port drayage to transport your products, you know exactly how important the service can be. But if you were to poll a group of random people, you may get five different definitions of the term "drayage." That begs the question, how is one of the most crucial steps in the supply chain and most vital components of global trade such a confusing concept? When you break it down, it's not too difficult to grasp.
Drayage, by definition, means the transportation of freight from an ocean port to another destination. Today, drayage is also used to describe the process of transporting products and goods over short distances or over "the first mile."
While drayage often means short-distance movements during the supply chain process, it's primarily used in the container shipping space. Drayage loads usually have arrival and departure points in the same city and don't include long-haul, national transportation.
Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:
You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.
To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.
Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.
As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.
But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.
QUOTE REQUESTRelyEx was created because our founders saw a need in the logistics space for more reliability and efficiency. Our team of container drayage experts provides your business with unique solutions to nuanced shipping problems, minimizing demurrage and ensuring the successful delivery of your freight.
Demurrage is a charge issued by a port, carrier, or railroad company for storing containers that do not load and unload their cargo promptly. Once the daily limit of free time is exceeded, shippers are charged daily demurrage fees until their cargo is shipped. Though different ports have different policies, charges can range from $75 to $150 per container, per day, for a set number of days. Additional demurrage fees are incurred if a shipper exceeds the port's parameters.
Even when shippers maintain a tight schedule for unloading freight, external factors can play an uncontrollable part. Typically, shipping mistakes caused by human error trigger the most demurrage charges. Some of the most common causes of demurrage include:
Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.
If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.
QUOTE REQUESTPaperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.
Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:
At RelyEx, we know first-hand how stressful supply chain problems can be for business owners. Though drayage shipping might seem minor on the surface, it affects every stage of your shipping process. And when inevitable hurdles manifest, RelyEx propels you over the proverbial roadblocks with a proactive mindset and a passion for challenging projects. Another season of Long Beach Badminton is about to kick off, and there will be many new faces all over the Moore League after a strong class of seniors graduated last spring.
Cabrillo will look to defend their historic Moore League title last season, but will indeed face some challenges after top singles player Jedrek De Guzman and two of their best girls’ players graduated last year.
“Defending a championship is gonna be a challenge for us because we lost some of our top players,” said 2023 Moore League Coach of the Year Russian Joe Galima. “But overall I think our boys’ side and some of our younger girls can do a good job helping to lift us.”

Brian Habacon will return for the Jaguars on the boys singles side after finishing 4th place in Moore League last season, while Galima expects returner Joaquin Orozco to play as a singles starter this season after spending last year in doubles.
Galima also expects big things from his top boys doubles group of Allen De Dios and Justine Yambao.
“They’ve played together the past two years, so obviously a lot of great chemistry has been built,” said Galima. “I have high expectations from them this season.”
On the girls side, Galima expects Jasmin Ramos to lead the way after scoring 2nd place in Moore League singles last year, while Cyril Dela-Torre is a new face to look out for in girls singles, as Galima believes she has improved the most this offseason.
At Long Beach Poly, the Jackrabbits will also look to utilize their depth and overall skill level to dethrone Cabrillo as Moore League champions.
“Our strength has always been not having a glaring weakness,” said Poly Coach Steve Meckna. “We are always able to be competitive in singles and doubles for both boys and girls, which makes us hard to beat.”
On the boys side, Poly will be led by senior Nick Jensen in singles and senior Victor Lim in doubles, who Meckna dubs the “strong men” of the team. Junior Josh Chhauy is another player who has developed nicely and will be a key component of Poly’s team after earning a varsity spot last season. Meckna also expects big things from sophomore Danny Lam.
Senior Alana Leuth will lead the Poly girls following her 4th place finish in Moore League girls singles last year, while senior Soki Phay will also be looked to as a leader for the Jackrabbits.
Junior Nga Pham is another player to keep an eye on, as Meckna dubs her the most improved player on the team this season.
“She is very much a student of the sport,” said Meckna. “She is always watching badminton videos on youtube, and I admire how dedicated she is to learning about the sport and improving her game both on and off the court.”
Despite all the talent they possess, Meckna believes the most important key to winning the Moore League title will be how the Jackrabbits manage their emotions during games.
“There’s being a good player and then there’s playing well when the stakes are high.” said Meckna. “How our team does this year will come down to how well we handle pressure situations and how we can push ourselves through moments of frustration.”
At Wilson, the Bruins also saw most of their varsity team graduate last year, and will thus face some obstacles as many of their younger players continue to adapt and grow.
“I have a new group of players to work with who are getting used to the higher pace and physical demand varsity matches typically demand.” said Wilson Coach Adrian Marquez. “It’s going to be a big challenge for us, but I have a few veterans on our team who are doing their best to help their team be where they need to be.”
The Bruins will be led by senior Abhishek Jain on the boys singles side, who won the Moore League singles title last year.
“He is hands down the best singles player this league has at this very moment,” said Marquez. “He has gone through an explosive training regimen since the end of CIF regionals last year in May, and I expect a lot from him.”
Senior Susana Martinez will lead the way on the girls doubles side, as Marquez calls her the powerhouse of the women’s squad and “the voice of calm” during intense moments in games.
New varsity additions Valerie Espinoza and Denise Abon are another team to keep an eye on in girls doubles, as they were successful as partners last season in JV and have built great chemistry coming into this season.
“They are quick, smart, and carry a lot of weight behind their smashes.” said Marquez “I expect to see a lot of great things from them this season.”
Lakewood will also see a plethora of new faces this season, having added 23 new athletes to their team this season.
“We have a wonderful cast of returning juniors and just a couple returning seniors.” said Lakewood Coach John Henderson. “I’m expecting that our juniors will continue to develop their skills and compete well in the CIF tournament. I also expect our team to challenge the traditional powerhouses in our league and maybe deliver a few surprises along the way.”
Juniors Jacob Vong and Richi Chhit will return as the leading boys doubles team for the Lancers after finishing 2nd place in Moore League Mixed Doubles last season. They have both been playing at the varsity level since freshman year.
“I am looking forward to them leading the team by example as our veteran players,” said Lakewood assistant coach Wesley Lum. “I believe they will battle for 1st place in Moore League Boys Doubles and that they have a chance to be top 8 for CIF individuals.”
It will be a special year for Jacob Vong in particular, as he is a recipient of a distinguished nomination for the Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame for his strong play throughout the past three years, having achieved an 18-2 Mixed Doubles record in Moore League matches.
Among the 23 new athletes, Lum looks to sophomores Cecilia Fonseca and Giselle Maravilla as the standout rookies.
“They both like to compete and play with a ton of heart,” said Lum. “I believe they will be important members of our varsity squad.”

OneOne of Long Beach’s most notable newcomers is the restaurant Union located inside Compound, a nonprofit cultural and community space with an art gallery in the Zaferia neighborhood. Behind the stoves is Eugene Santiago, chef and founder of the Southeast Asian fusion pop-up Baryo. Union’s menu is full of playful dishes, like a riff on Spanish papas brava made with cassava, charred broccolini, and radicchio. Bartender Stephanie Butchko’s cocktail menu incorporates ingredients like pandan, Sichuan pepper, lemongrass, and tamarind.
“It feels a bit Bestia-like when it first opened in Downtown LA,” says Luis Navarro of Navarro Hospitality Group, the restaurant’s chief consultant. “This is something Long Beach deserves, in a place where it should be. We should be experimenting with space as much as we do with food.” Navaro and his wife and partner, Brenda Rivera, refined Union’s concept from its beginning phases up until its first week of dinner service in January.
Before Santiago came on board and opened Union, Compound and its on-site restaurant space faced some uphill battles since opening in 2020. A temporary pandemic-related closure in 2021 led chef Jason Witzl of the Southern Italian spot Ellie’s to halt plans to move the restaurant from Alamitos Beach to Compound. Chef Arthur Gonzalez of Panxa Cocina also considered taking over the space before his passing in 2022.
Santiago’s culinary career includes stints in Las Vegas under chef Kerry Simon at Carson Kitchen and at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino before opening Baryo, which began to pop up in Long Beach in 2016. Santiago melded Filipino comfort foods like pancit and kare kare with California produce and sensibilities. The pop-up earned him both critics’ appreciation for breaking with tradition and jeers from those desiring a more traditional approach, especially Asian aunties, Santiago says. Santiago brings this spirit of experimentation to Union amid the growing popularity of Filipino food in Southern California. “While I was still working at restaurants, my pop-ups were really an extension of me protecting my mental health and creativity,” he says. “Baryo has been through many iterations. I am allowed a certain creative freedom with it and that is ultimately what inspired Union.”
Union isn’t strictly a Filipino restaurant though. Its menu draws inspiration from a multitude of Asian cuisines and includes fried chicken tucked into bao buns, steak served with a golden raisin chile crisp, a large-format pork kare kare, and a whole branzino slathered in a bright green nam jim sauce.
Santiago was hand-picked by Compound’s founder Megan Scripps Tagliaferri to run the restaurant; she thought his cross-cultural culinary approach would resonate well with locals. “He’s such a beautiful, humble human, and that is precisely what we needed for this project,” she says. Tagliaferri, who is the heiress to the Scripps media fortune, tells Eater that she is aware that the community surrounding Compound is underserved, with 60 to 90 percent of children in the neighborhood experiencing food insecurity. She tells Eater that the Union team is “dedicated to [reducing] food disparity throughout the neighborhood” but declined to give specifics about what programs the restaurant will run to reach that goal.
Though Tagliaferri considered opening Compound at Drake Park toward the eastern edge of the LA River, Zaferia’s “creative pulse,” thanks to its many studios, architectural firms, and longstanding restaurants like Pho Hong Phat, Los Compadres, and Good Time, proved to be a better fit for her vision. “There’s a lot of artists and food spaces in this area and food and art are connectors — it’s a way for people to sit down, engage, educate,” Tagliaferri says.
In the coming months, Union will continue to solidify its menu, while, Tagliaferri says, Compound will introduce some initiatives focused on serving the community.
Union at Compound is located at 1395 Coronado Avenue in Long Beach and is open from Wednesday through Saturday 4 p.m to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Long Beach officials are urging residents to prepare as a powerful storm makes it way to region, one that could bring round two of dangerous flooding to the city on Sunday.
Mayor Rex Richardson and Long Beach Fire Captain Jake Heflin held a press conference Saturday afternoon, alerting the public of its plans and the resources available to residents. Their message was simple: Stay home, stay alert and get ready.

"If you know that your home is vulnerable and you've seen flooding before, prepare for it now," said Richardson. "Don't get up on the roof because you have a leak during the rain. You should be doing that today."
On Thursday, a storm system that doused Southern California dropped nearly three inches of rain on Long Beach over a six-hour period, which the city says is more than the historical rainfall for the entire month of February.
"We had just under two-and-a-half inches of rain in about 6 to 8 hours," said Heflin. "A significant amount of rain that caused local area flooding in some areas of our city. People were not ready. It's important that you take time now to prepare."
That rainfall caused major flooding on the 710 Freeway near Pacific Coast Highway, causing a temporary closure. Eyewitness News viewers also reported seeing several vehicles stalled along neighborhood streets, some submerged in high water.
The second storm could bring 5 to 6 inches of rain to Long Beach with even stronger conditions, including gusty winds and high surf. The city said residents in historically vulnerable, low-lying areas - like the peninsula and Alamitos Bay - should prepare now.
"We've conducted inspections and performed maintenance to ensure that catch basins in our flood-prone areas are clear of debris, that pump stations and seawall plugs are functioning, ensuring our crews are staffed this weekend and ready to respond if we have blocked storm drains or fallen trees or other storm impacts," said Richardson.
Empty sandbags are still available for Long Beach residents at all LBFD Fire Stations. If you live in Long Beach and need help filling those sandbags, you can visit the Lifeguard Station at 72nd Place between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
"You need to have a plan," said Heflin. "Where is that safe meeting place? Where are we going to go if we need to evacuate? We don't want people to wait for an order to evacuate until they need definitive action to say, 'It's time to take care of our family.'"
A flood watch will remain in effect from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon for Los Angeles County.
