Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in Louisville, KY So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

'The vegan KFC': This new Louisville restaurant serves alternative fried chicken items

James Morier is the kind of guy who believes in things out of this world. He also believes in lessons from the Earth.

Take, for example, his account of a recent visit to Cave Hill Cemetery, where the father of KFC is buried.

“I stopped by to see Harland,” Morier says casually of Col. Harland Sanders. “I talked to his grave.”

It might be like talking to a mentor from a slightly different planet.

Morier is following those fried chicken footprints, but just in his own ― chickenless ― way.

A few years ago, the Los Angeles native founded Cosmic Bird, a vegan fried chicken eatery serving “fauxltry” or fake poultry. The longtime chef has gained a nice following through pop-ups at ShopBar and The Merryweather, among other Louisville venues.

That began after Morier moved to Louisville in December 2021. A month later, Cosmic Bird took flight here.

On Feb. 12, Morier’s mobile business moved into a brick-and-mortar space at 916 Baxter Ave., previously the sites of vegan places such as the Flour Shoppe and Morel’s Cafe.

He called the opening “surreal.”

“As a child, I thought to myself, ‘I want to be a chef,’” Morier, 45, told the Courier Journal. “Forty years later, and after working in the industry for 28 years, here I am.”

Morier has collected a bunch of restaurant experiences, from working at casinos to working as a sushi chef to selling grilled cheese sandwiches at Phish concerts to afford the tickets.

A turning point came in 2019 when Morier started a vegan diet.

“I needed a change mentally, physically, and spiritually,” he said. “I decided, ‘I’m going to do this for my health and all the animals.’”

Morier said he enjoyed most meat alternatives.

“But I didn’t like the options for chicken,” he said. “So I started playing around with it.”

He said he found a recipe that felt like a “eureka” moment. Morier uses a mix of vital wheat gluten, beans, seasonings, legumes and other items for Cosmic Bird’s chicken items.

“It made a splash,” he said. “People know me as the vegan fried chicken sandwich guy.”

Around Louisville, where people may have a soft spot for fried chicken, fans of Morier have asked him some version of this question: “How is it being the vegan KFC?”

“It’s absolutely special,” Morier said. “Everybody knows about fried chicken here, what allows me to do what I'm doing here.”

Cosmic Bird features other vegan items, such as a fish sandwich, mushroom burger, Impossible meat sausages, onion rings, and burritos. The restaurant will offer weekly specials, including upcoming “Sushi Sundays” and “Hippie Happy Meals.”

As Morier says, he has “far out” dreams for Cosmic Bird.

“It’s about community first,” he said. “The vegan community is beautiful and vibrant.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — How much will insurance pay? That's the big question residents have following the massive fire at 310 at NuLu on Monday.

Tuesday evening, Louisville Fire Department still had two fire engines at both ends of the building. The people who called this place home are not allowed inside as their clothes, pictures, cars and everything else that made their lives are trapped inside the building. Most everyone has found a safe place to sleep in a hotel across the street.

For many residents like Michelle Hallenbeck, the process of what happens next begins.

"We are in the process of figuring out all the paperwork that needs to be filled out to cover my hotel until I get a new apartment," Hallenbeck said.

Hallenbeck, who is finishing her PhD in microbiology, called her fourth-floor apartment home for the last three and half years. The fire created a hole in her apartment, on the top floor, she didn't want or need. She ran from the fire wearing a coat over her pajamas and carrying her gecko. The kindness of strangers combined with a short shopping trip makes up a workable wardrobe.

“This is a mixture of what I was given and stuff I bought at Target,” said Hallenbeck.

Until her renter's insurance kicks in, Hallenbeck's employer is helping cover her hotel expenses. A side from clothes, personal electronics and personal items, her biggest expense is the care and feeding of her yellow gecko, which has nothing to do with her renters' insurance.

“Nothing that is not replaceable, I mean all my furniture, all my clothes, the tank I have for my gecko, the tank I have now is much too small for her, so I need to get a bigger one," said Hallenbeck.

Most everything she owns is still trapped in the building. Her renter's insurance will cover losses up to $10,000. The list of things to replace is adding up fast. Her car is in the garage under the apartments, and she hasn't seen the car but suspects it is a complete loss.

The property manager told her a studio apartment will be available in another building in about a month. She expects her renter's insurance will cover the expenses until then. Hallenbeck told WDRB that this is the second apartment fire she has experienced. The first when she was a teenager.

AT&T blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating.

WASHINGTON — AT&T said Thursday that all of its customers impacted by a nationwide service outage have cell service again, after an hourslong outage that appeared to be the result of a technical error, not a malicious attack.

An AT&T spokesperson said all service had been restored in an update shortly before 3:30 p.m. Eastern, nearly 12 hours after customers began reporting issues.

“We have restored wireless service to all our affected customers," AT&T said. "We sincerely apologize to them. Keeping our customers connected remains our top priority, and we are taking steps to ensure our customers do not experience this again in the future.”

AT&T blamed the incident on an error in coding, without elaborating.

“Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack,” the Dallas-based company said.

Downdetector, which tracks online outage reports submitted by users, showed more than 74,000 AT&T customers reported issues at the peak of the outage. By noon Eastern, that number had declined to about 60,000 reported outages.

The outages began around 3:30 a.m. ET. The carrier has more than 240 million subscribers, the country's largest.

RELATED: AT&T outage: What is SOS mode mean on a cellphone?

So far, no reason has been given for the outages. But Lee McKnight, an associate professor in the iSchool at Syracuse University, believes the most likely cause of the outage is a cloud misconfiguration, or human error.

"A possible but far less likely outcome is an intentional malicious hack of ATT’s network, but the diffuse pattern of outages across the country suggests something more fundamental,” McKnight said in an emailed statement.

While the outage tracking website also showed 4,000 outage reports for Verizon and more than 1,900 from T-Mobile, both companies said in their statements they didn't experience outages.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally. Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation,” Verizon said.

“Our network is operating normally. Down Detector is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks,” T-Mobile said.

Cricket Wireless, which is owned by AT&T, had more than 9,000 outages, Downdetector said Thursday.

During the outage, customers still had access to "SOS mode," which allows cell phone users without access to regular service to call 911 in an emergency, piggybacking off of other networks nearby to do so.

The outage became a major trend on social media overnight, with users on X (formerly Twitter) flocking to a number of hashtags to discuss the issue. Although #CyberAttack was one of the trending hashtags associated with the outage, there is no indication that an attack was the cause of the outage.

What if your rent payment wasn't due all at once? A Louisville company is trying it out

For Louisville residents living paycheck to paycheck, paying each month's rent on the first isn't always practical.

The city's average rent is hovering around $1,250 for a two-bedroom apartment, and one paycheck can easily be consumed by the charge, leaving tenants with little money for food, utilities or other expenses until their next check comes in.

That cycle could end soon for some renters, however, thanks to a nonprofit that's making it easier to split rent over two payments − without paying any fees.

The Flagstone Initiative, based in Oakland, California, has created software that lets landlords accept rent twice each month. And it's already found a local partner in Beacon/SOCAYR, a property management company that's introduced rent splitting at five of its locations citywide.

On Wednesday, Flagstone CEO Shin Inoue gave a presentation before members of the Louisville Apartment Association in hopes of drumming up more interest, saying rent splitting can help prevent tenants from falling behind while reducing delinquency and turnover rates for landlords.

"We spend a lot of time addressing these issues when they come up," Inoue said, referencing renters on the verge of eviction. "What if we did a lot more upstream so we can prevent these things from happening in the first place?"

Housing advocates who've worked with residents to obtain rental assistance called rent splitting "low hanging fruit" and "common sense" − though it's not common practice.

"There's really no burden on the landlord other than to say yes," said Tony Curtis, executive director of Louisville's Metropolitan Housing Coalition. " ... It should be an option. It's not."

Morgan Wimberg, an asset management associate with CF Capital, which owns 1,100 rental units in the Louisville region, said she knows many of the company's tenants struggle financially, and she sees Flagstone's rent splitting software as an easy way to offer relief.

"We want to retain those residents, we don't want to shut them out," Wimberg said. "... Everything is about elevating their lives and elevating our experience along with theirs."

Flagstone is already operating in four other cities nationwide, including Chicago and Birmingham, Alabama. And Inoue said the nonprofit typically sees a 30% to 45% usage rate between residents offered rent splitting.

The organization also offers $500 loans with zero interest to help cover rent when tenants face "one-off shock" expenses, with grantees required to pay $20 back each month over 25 weeks.

Inoue said Flagstone's goal is to focus on renters who don't always qualify for assistance. And while rent splitting isn't the end-all solution, it is one tool that can help stabilize thousands of households.

"We need to continue to do the work together because the challenges that these residents face are so big that while these (programs) are helpful, it doesn't solve it," he told members of the apartment association.

Travis Yates, executive director of Beacon/SOCAYR, said dozens of renters have already opted to split their rent since the company began offering the option in January. And he expects that number to grow.

"I think within the year, everyone who has the option will take it," he said. "Why wouldn't you?"

Flagstone's software took some time and resources to set up, and it's changed some of Beacon's practices, including around late fees, Yates said. But the partnership is worth it if it keeps families from falling behind.

"There's no catching up when they fall behind," Yates said. "Anything we can do to prevent them from falling behind, it's just going to make everybody's world better."
