MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis in May is returning to Tom Lee Park this year.

That’s the official word from the festival’s President and CEO Jim Holt as the lineup for the Beale Street Music Festival is released. Headliners include GloRilla, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, and Earth Wind & Fire.

As the lineup for the music festival is unveiled, there is a sense of excitement that Memphis in May will return to the iconic Mississippi riverfront. Last year the festival was held at Liberty Park in Midtown due to the ongoing construction on the riverfront.

The festival’s President and CEO Jim Holt says the return to Tom Lee Park is important.

“It’s absolutely crucial. Quite honestly, five months ago, I wasn’t sure we were going to be back,” he said. “We came with something very big. We wanted to re-establish our footprint back downtown.”

Holt cited concerns about delays in the construction of the major, multi-million-dollar revamp of Tom Lee Park. But he commends Mayor Jim Strickland for sticking to his word that the festival would return to the riverfront.

Holt notes the events will now be hosted in a smaller space.

“We’ve lost about 40% of the space that we typically would utilize for the festival and that’s going to cause a reduction in the capacity for the music festival and a reduction in the number of competition teams that will be able to participate in the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest,” he said.

The flat terrain Tom Lee Park was once known for is no more. We asked about the concern of damaging the new additions to the space.

“The park has been heavily programmed with a lot of infrastructure, foliage, plantings, and other items. But MRPP is fencing off a lot of that which further restricts our space for usage, but we’ve got a plan in place to make sure that the park is protected. It’s a major investment for the city,” Holt said.

Memphis River Parks Partnership, which runs the park, told City Council last week that capacity does not need to be cut by 40 percent and that as many as 55,000 people can be on the lawn at any time.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Lumineers, Earth Wind & Fire, Glorilla, The Roots and more will hit the stage in May for the 2023 Beale Street Music Festival at the revamped Tom Lee Park.

Memphis in May officials unveiled the lineup Monday afternoon at a special event at Roadshow BMW and showed off the new official poster by Memphis artist Danny Broadway.

Headliners include The Lumineers, Greta Van Fleet, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Earth Wind & Fire, HARDY, Jazmine Sullivan, The Roots, AJR and 311.

Hometown hip hop star GloRilla, Blues guitarist extraordinaire Gary Clark Jr., reggae icon Ziggy Marley, indie rock of Young the Giant, classic rockers Live, PJ Morton, The Struts, Gov’t Mule, mike., Andy Grammer, Yola, Dru Hill, Toadies, Lucinda Williams, Living Colour, Cameo, White Reaper, Shovels & Rope, Marcy Playground, Phony Ppl, Low Cut Connie, Beach Weather, Myron Elkins, Mac Saturn and more will also hit the stage.

MIM officials announced previously that the Memphis Tourism “Blues Stage on Beale” will move to Handy Park. IN years past, the Blues Tent had been part of the festivities at Tom Lee Park. The Blues Stage will now be open to the public and free of charge, with no ticket required. Organizers said the move allows them to offer the blues lineup to a wider audience.

While it’s free to the public, there will be a reserved section for festival ticket holders at the Blues Stage on Beale.

Hitting the Handy Park stage will be headliners like Los Lobos, Keb Mo, North Mississippi Allstars, and Blues talent including Ana Popavic, Bernard Allison, Colin James, Cedric Burnside, Selwyn Birchwood, Blind Mississippi Morris, Ghost Town Blues Band, Mr. Sipp, Reba Russell Band, Will Tucker, Rodd Bland Members Only Band, Mark Muleman Massey and Ollie Moore.

Memphis River Parks Partnership announced Riverside Dr. is closed from Georgia Ave. to Union Ave. through July 1. The organization said work would be done on crosswalks for Tom Lee Park.

The group said there will still be access to the South Bluffs gate on Riverside and to Beale Street Landing for cruises that are docking. They said when Beale Street reopens, the closure will move from Union to Beale.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee is on the cusp on becoming the first state to prohibit drag shows in public after Gov. Bill Lee signed HB0009, which passed in the state house Thursday.

Members of the Memphis drag community described this legislation as dehumanizing, unconstitutional and bad for business.

“We provide a huge amount of revenue to the state and I guess they don’t want our money,” said drag performer Bulla DuBalle, show hostess and show director for the Atomic Rose.

Atomic Rose is one of the most popular night clubs in Memphis and its weekend drag shows, including Sunday's drag brunch, are a big reason why.

“It’s a huge tourist draw,” DuBalle said. “Everybody loves a drag brunch. It's a fun time to come out, eat a great meal and just be entertained for a while.”

But those performances are threatened by the Tennessee proposed law moving through the state legislature that would ban drag shows on public property. The bill also expands the definition to ensure any sort of drag performance would be considered an "adult cabaret performance."

“We would then have to purchase a strip club license in order to run drag shows here,” said Atomic Rose general manager Charlie Barnett. “You can’t have a strip-club license and a liquor license inside the historic district of Beale Street.”

DuBalle is worried how the legislation could impact Tennessee cities beyond Memphis.

“There are multiple venues in Nashville that have been long-standing that have contributed millions of dollars in sales tax and liquor tax to Tennessee,” she said.

DuBalle is also concerned over the bill’s vague language, which she said could be a slippery slope for other types of speech and expression.

“The bill makes very little distinguishment between a drag performer and a trans or gender non-conforming person,” DuBalle said. “Is cosplay drag? I am a founding member of the Tennessee Shakespeare Company. I played several drag roles on the stage.”

Barnett believes the bill could lead to a nation-wide boycott of Tennessee by the LGBTQ+ community.

“I advise all the major business owners in this state, all these big corporations, call your governor, call your representatives,” he said. “Tell them this boycott will hurt you.”

Supporters of the measure in the state legislature argued that drag performances in public are inappropriate for young people and that the measure would be a common sense child safety bill.

Tennessee is one of 19 states that either have active bills or are proposing legislation limiting drag performances. If passed in the state senate, Tennessee could become the first to have the bill become law.

The Tigers (5-2) have now won five matches in a row after knocking off No. 13 Northwestern 4-1 on Friday.

Memphis took the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 victories on the first and third courts.

In singles, The Tigers swept three pairings and came from behind in two others to get the 7-0 win.

Pau Fanlo dominated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 before David Stevenson won 6-2, 6-2 on court two.

Harry Rock came from behind to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the fourth position and clinch the winning point. Jeremy Taylor won in straight sets (6-4, 7-6(5)) on court four and No. 35 Pablo Alemany had to tough out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory on the top line. Alemany improved to 5-1 on the year in singles.

Juan Zabala closed out the match on court six with another come-from-behind victory 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

"It was nice to play at home and in front of our fans," head coach Paul Goebel said. "We played well and I'm proud they finished off the weekend strong.
