Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in Oklahoma City, OK So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

Some Oklahoma school districts have announced that they will be closed or students will learn remotely Wednesday because of the winter weather and ice that have hit the state this week.

5:30 p.m. Tuesday Update: The winter weather caused a woman in Shawnee to slip and fall, breaking her tailbone.

1:45 p.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says the third round of winter weather on Wednesday will bring a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow. As of Tuesday afternoon, models show at least a quarter-inch of sleet or a quarter-inch of freezing rain.

Wind will be very light, but there could be power outages.

Jonathan says he's more concerned about very icy roads, especially on Thursday.

12:15 p.m. Tuesday Update: Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews continue to treat slick and hazardous conditions in most counties in southern, southeastern, eastern and northeastern portions of Oklahoma from the I-44 corridor to Arkansas.

Freezing rain is developing in Grady, Stephens and Jefferson counties to the south. A freezing rain band also is moving across several counties in southeastern Oklahoma. Crews continue to plow and treat the roads as well as possible.

Interstate 35 from Ardmore south to Texas is considered extremely slick and dangerous, and authorities said they discourage traveling in that area.

Oklahoma City metro crews are ready throughout counties to start treating when anticipated precipitation moves into the area. The Tulsa metro is also treating for slick spots.

ODOT officials said drivers should avoid unnecessary travel. If people have to travel, authorities suggest using caution on elevated surfaces, reducing speeds and allowing extra time for travel. They also recommend the following:

11:50 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says a third wave will bring more ice to Oklahoma Wednesday night. He says roads will become icy and will likely be worse than what we've seen during the first two waves, especially in Oklahoma City. Thursday morning's commute could be slick.

11:05 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says west of Oklahoma City is pretty quiet, but east of the metro has pockets of freezing rain and freezing drizzle as well as pockets of sleet.

Jonathan says not everyone will see precipitation and that the chance for people in the Oklahoma City metro to see freezing rain is winding down.

East of the metro, though, has a higher probability – between 60% and 80% – of seeing freezing rain and drizzle.

The biggest risk for road conditions remains as slick spots in some areas.

Authorities also have extended the winter weather advisory for Oklahoma until 6 a.m. Thursday. A third wave of winter weather is expected to hit the state Wednesday evening.

10:10 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says freezing rain and drizzle are falling in northern Oklahoma, but they are light. The Oklahoma City metro is seeing very light drizzle, and there are freezing rain showers and pockets of sleet in the southern part of the metro.

The icing event continues in southern Oklahoma.

Jonathan says the bulk of the ice accumulation will be from Ada to McAlester during the afternoon hours. The Oklahoma City metro should see a glaze of freezing rain.

Roads will still be impacted by the freezing rain causing slick spots in southern and eastern Oklahoma.

9:40 a.m. Tuesday Update: One of the major concerns whenever winter weather hits is if the power will stay on. KOCO 5 spoke with Aaron Cooper with OG&E about what the electric company is doing to keep the power on. Open the video player below to hear from OG&E.

9:20 a.m. Tuesday Update: Winter weather has impacted the roads since Monday morning, with a second round of ice and freezing rain moving through Oklahoma on Tuesday.

9:05 a.m. Tuesday Update: Most of the Oklahoma City metro is dry, but KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says that will change in about an hour. The winter weather will start with some drizzle – some rain and some freezing rain – as storm cells head into Moore and Norman. There’s been much more winter weather activity in southern Oklahoma.

KOCO 5 Field Meteorologist Michael Armstrong is tracking the winter weather and road conditions near Ardmore. Open the video player below to see.

8:50 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says freezing drizzle is starting to form near Blanchard and Chickasha, and there’s thunder sleet near Wynnewood.

He said the worst-affected area is in southern Oklahoma, where there’s significant icing.

8:30 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says the Oklahoma City metro is dry at the moment, but the chance for sleet and freezing rain is still there and doesn’t come in until after 10 a.m.

Freezing rain and sleet are coming into the Pauls Valley area, and there’s significant freezing rain near Springer and north of Ardmore. Jonathan says the areas from Wynnewood east toward Ada will have a significant icing event.

8 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says there’s a low chance of a rain-snow mix in northern Oklahoma and a 40% chance in the Oklahoma City metro. The biggest chance remains in southern Oklahoma, as areas near Ardmore and Ada have a 70% chance of a rain-snow mix.

Jonathan says the Oklahoma City metro still has a window over the next few hours for some sleet and ice to move in.

7:30 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says southern Oklahoma has a much higher probability of getting significant ice today, but road impacts will be from southwestern Oklahoma to northeastern Oklahoma.

Southeastern Oklahoma could see a quarter inch of sleet while areas in the Oklahoma City metro to northern and western Oklahoma could get a glaze.

7:10 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says the current temperatures are in the teens, and the wind chill only gets up into the lower teens. He also says the high for today will be in the 20s.

6:50 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO 5 is tracking the latest conditions brought on by the winter weather, including at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. A few flights have already been canceled, but many others are scheduled to depart Tuesday.

6 a.m. Tuesday Update: KOCO Meteorologist Jonathan Conder says the second round of winter weather hits Tuesday morning. Oklahomans will see scattered sleet and freezing rain, and snow is possible.

The state Capitol was busy this week as the legislature comes up on its first major deadline of the 2023 session. Thursday, March 2nd is the final day for bills to move out of their assigned committees.

SB 333 by Sen. Darrell Weaver was heard in Senate Retirement & Insurance on Tuesday but failed due to the lack of a motion to approve. If passed, SB 333 would have allowed municipalities to transfer any cost related to worker’s compensation or medical treatment of a first responder diagnosed with PTSD due to a work related incident to the property taxes of all property within the service district of the first responder’s department.

This means that a municipality would have the legal authority to raise property taxes on those in unincorporated areas outside of the municipality. While SB 333 failed in committee, the same legislation is in HB 2398 by Rep. Neil Hays which was passed from the House Judiciary committee and awaits consideration by the full House of Representatives.

HB 1921 by Rep. Lonnie Sims and SB 647 by Sen. Dave Rader have yet to be heard in committee but could be placed on an agenda for next week. HB 1921 would create countywide Hazard Mitigation Assessment Districts which would be funded by a countywide property tax increase. As Farm Bureau members have long been opposed to property tax increases, the OKFB public policy team will continue engaging in conversations with legislators to ensure member concerns are represented should the bill be considered in committee.

SB 647 would allow county commissioners in counties with populations greater than 200,000 to establish and enforce fines and penalties for violations of the county’s health inspection, property maintenance and building regulations. OKFB believes a multitude of regulations could be enforced in unincorporated county areas under those three categories.

Farm Bureau members have several concerns about the impacts such regulations could have on farmers and ranchers operating within normal and appropriate agriculture practices in such counties. Additionally, while the 200,000 population parameters would only allow such practices in three counties currently, several other counties in Oklahoma would likely reach that threshold in the coming years.

This week, Oklahoma Farm Bureau also held its annual Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City. Following a full day of speakers discussing a variety of topics important to Oklahoma farmers and ranchers, 15 members from six county Farm Bureaus visited with their legislators at the state Capitol to discuss legislation and issues impacting rural Oklahoma and agriculturalists in the state.

For an update on weekly happenings at the Capitol and an outlook on what is ahead, be sure to tune in to Oklahoma Farm Bureau’s weekly public policy update each Friday at noon via Zoom.

Bruce Campbell: Horror icon. Self-proclaimed B-movie actor. New York Times best selling author. Consummate convention headliner. Game show host. Touring act?

Campbell is hitting the road this spring for Bruce-O-Rama, a 22-city tour in which he hosts the pop culture game show Last Fan Standing before introducing a screening of one of his classic films. “It’s hybrid entertainment!” Campbell tells me.

“We’re kind of mixing it up here. I’ve toured with a game show before, Last Fan Standing, and I’ve toured with Evil Dead movies, but we never really mashed them together. It gives folks a little more bang for their buck and breaks things up a bit.”

Last Fan Standing was originally created by Steve Sellery as a military trivia challenge before Campbell suggested a pop culture version. The result is something like Jeopardy for film geeks, with Cambpell serving as a sardonic yet affable answer to Alex Trebek. “It’s sort of an evening with Bruce wrapped in a game show,” Campbell notes. “It’s not really a game show. Some of the questions will trigger something that I’ve been in, which of course launches me into a ridiculous story. It’s a competition via storytelling.”

Last Fan Standing is unique in that everyone who attends the event has the chance to get on stage and play. Campbell explains, “Everybody who walks in that theater, one person’s gonna win it and no one knows it in advance. Everyone gets to play on their device. You get to vote. We haven’t vetted anybody. We don’t know the answers ourselves either. Everyone’s involved!”

He adds, “It’s not like you sit in a seat and mind your business. You’re actually part of the process, and it gets very exciting. The audience will get behind certain players that are coming from behind, and they’ll hate other players who are assholes. It’s really funny. We’re there to have a blast and watch an old movie.” In addition to bragging rights, Campbell hints that there may be Evil Dead Rise swag up for grabs as part of the winnings.

While it’s up to each promoter which movie will be shown, Campbell looks forward to seeing the audience react to his movies. “They all have their own different joys. Evil Dead is a little crude, so you get some nervous titters sometimes, but then it hits them in the face because it’s really gory. Evil Dead 2 has some funny laughs through it. Army of Darkness is just completely over the top, like an adventure movie gone bad. Bubba Ho-Tep might sneak in there. A little something for everybody.”

Speaking of Army of Darkness, although the film celebrated the 30th anniversary of its theatrical release earlier this month, Campbell is quick to note that they filmed it two years prior to its 1993 release. “Everyone says it’s the 30th anniversary. They forget the saga of actually making the movie. The movie was made in ’91, and it took two years to finish between [producer/financier] Dino De Laurentiis getting in a lawsuit with [distributor] Universal.”

He continues, “It was really a horrible two years there, then the thing comes out and bombs. Sam [Raimi, director], myself, Rob [Tapert, producer], my wife [Ida Gearon] was the costume designer on it, we all shiver when we think of that movie. We’re really glad that people like it, and I like to watch it with an audience because it’s a crowd-pleaser, but man, that movie gives me the chills — and not because it’s scary.”

With several Bruce-O-Rama events having already sold out, additional shows are being added on the same day in select cities. But be warned: these are the only planned appearances for the year. “We’re not going to add anymore dates,” Bruce mentions. “This is a way to get a bunch of cities quickly so that the rest of the year isn’t gobbledegook-ed up with dates all spread out. This is a way to just do it in a compact way. I have publishing to do, man!”

After pursuing the traditional publishing route on his first three books — 2001’s If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, 2005’s Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way, and 2017’s Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor — Campbell is now savoring the independence of being his own publisher. “I decided to go my own way. I’ve got a pipeline now of things that maybe a mainstream publisher wouldn’t have done. It might have been two quirky or oddball or whatever. I don’t have to get anybody’s approval for anything.”

The experiment began in 2020 with The Cool Side of My Pillow: A Book of Essays, the inaugural publication from Campbell’s Eastmoor Media. “I’m glad that technology has changed enough that I can put out my books through Amazon. I don’t have to go to New York City and plead with a publisher in a high-rise building to take my books. It’s been a fun exploration.”

Campbell teases some of his upcoming publishing ventures: “I have two diaries from my grandfather that I think are really interesting. My mother wrote two westerns I’m going to publish, and then I’ll read that as a full, old-timey radio play thing. That’s my side hustle, and it keeps me out of trouble.” He also promises a third memoir down the line. “There’s a George Lucas trilogy in there. In about 10 years or so, I’ll do The Final Confessions.”

Stay tuned for the second half of my chat with Campbell, in which he provides insight into Evil Dead Rise and more, next week. In the meantime, be sure to get your Bruce-O-Rama tickets.

Water leak leaves Oklahoma City man, pickup stuck in deep water outside business

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – It was a scary start to the morning for one Oklahoma City man with his truck getting stuck in 5-6 feet of water.“Well, that’s shocking to me, too – when your employees send you a picture and see a vehicle standing or sitting in a hole like that,” said Ray Hite, ownere of Hite Plastics.Hite has owned Hite Plastics in Oklahoma City for about 30 years – but he’s never seen anything like this. ...

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – It was a scary start to the morning for one Oklahoma City man with his truck getting stuck in 5-6 feet of water.

“Well, that’s shocking to me, too – when your employees send you a picture and see a vehicle standing or sitting in a hole like that,” said Ray Hite, ownere of Hite Plastics.

Hite has owned Hite Plastics in Oklahoma City for about 30 years – but he’s never seen anything like this.

He says the mess started Tuesday afternoon when repairs were made to a water line with a fire hydrant leaking.

“As we were leaving for the day around four o’clock we noticed the water was rushing out onto the street,” Hite said.

So they called the city to report the leak and didn’t think much of it – until Wednesday morning around 6:30 when employees started showing up to work – leaving one of them in a hole!

“It’s dark of course and they saw some water on the road – but never thought that there would be a wash out of this size – enough to practically swallow his truck,” Hite said.

Suddenly the water started rushing into the man’s cab, into his seat.

“He climbed out through the window and was on top of the vehicle until the fire department showed up and got him a ladder to get him out,” said Hite.

Hite says he thinks the water was as deep as 5-6 feet.

He says crews were quick to come out and start pumping it out.

While he waits for repairs – he’s just thankful his employee is ok.

“He’s all right,” Hite said. “He’s fine, a little shaken. Got some wet socks and shoes that he needs to go get dried out.”

The city has a program where people who have incurred damages can file a claim with the city. You just have to file and see if you qualify through review with the city attorney’s office.
