Today, more than 80% of global shipping involves containers. They're packed with everything from personal storage items in dry containers to heavy machinery on flat rack containers. For business owners shipping products, getting a container from point A to point B requires precise planning and high-level tracking. But that's easier said than done when global supply chains become over-congested, leading to loading time issues and delays.
That's bad news for business owners who are already under a massive amount of stress. The truth is that container storage delays can cripple a business, but there's a viable solution: drayage brokers in San Antonio, TX like RelyEx. Drayage companies provide unique solutions to minimize demurrage and help ensure the successful delivery of your freight.
With more than 30 combined years of experience and a solutions-oriented team, RelyEx has quickly become the first choice for streamlined, efficient drayage services. To understand the true value of RelyEx's offerings in the global logistics industry, it helps to understand first what drayage is and why it's used.
If you're a seasoned business owner who uses port drayage to transport your products, you know exactly how important the service can be. But if you were to poll a group of random people, you may get five different definitions of the term "drayage." That begs the question, how is one of the most crucial steps in the supply chain and most vital components of global trade such a confusing concept? When you break it down, it's not too difficult to grasp.
Drayage, by definition, means the transportation of freight from an ocean port to another destination. Today, drayage is also used to describe the process of transporting products and goods over short distances or over "the first mile."
While drayage often means short-distance movements during the supply chain process, it's primarily used in the container shipping space. Drayage loads usually have arrival and departure points in the same city and don't include long-haul, national transportation.
Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:
You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.
To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.
Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.
If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.
As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.
But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.
QUOTE REQUESTRelyEx was created because our founders saw a need in the logistics space for more reliability and efficiency. The reality of the shipping and logistics industry is that it has become very transactional. It's an odd evolution, because most businesses seek a third-party logistics partner that is accessible, transparent, and committed to providing solutions.
As the logistics space continues to grow, it creates newfound expenses and complexities. Clients like ours know that and need a supply chain partner who is genuinely interested in their business. By understanding the needs of our customers and carriers, we can provide the most reliable, effective drayage services possible.

QUOTE REQUESTBased in the port city of San Antonio, RelyEx has a keen understanding of the challenges of managing the inbound and outbound flow of containers. Our team of container drayage experts provides your business with unique solutions to nuanced shipping problems, minimizing demurrage and ensuring the successful delivery of your freight.
Demurrage is a charge issued by a port, carrier, or railroad company for storing containers that do not load and unload their cargo promptly. Once the daily limit of free time is exceeded, shippers are charged daily demurrage fees until their cargo is shipped. Though different ports have different policies, charges can range from $75 to $150 per container, per day, for a set number of days. Additional demurrage fees are incurred if a shipper exceeds the port's parameters.
Even when shippers maintain a tight schedule for unloading freight, external factors can play an uncontrollable part. Typically, shipping mistakes caused by human error trigger the most demurrage charges. Some of the most common causes of demurrage include:
Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.
If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.
QUOTE REQUESTPaperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.
Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:
At RelyEx, we know first-hand how stressful supply chain problems can be for business owners. Though drayage shipping might seem minor on the surface, it affects every stage of your shipping process. And when inevitable hurdles manifest, RelyEx propels you over the proverbial roadblocks with a proactive mindset and a passion for challenging projects. The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods. Each week a local resident invites us over and lets us in on what makes their neighborhood special. Have we been to your neighborhood yet? Get in touch to share your story.
For most of my life, I’ve lived on the Northwest Side of San Antonio. Though the area has changed considerably, it’s always been a family-friendly community with great schools and caring neighbors.
Since moving back to San Antonio after attending university in Lubbock, I’ve been rediscovering my neighborhood and my hometown. The boom of residential growth in the area has attracted businesses, which makes my life so much easier. I don’t have to drive too far to get some shopping done and I’m especially happy about the new Sprouts grocery store nearby. As a San Antonian, of course, I love H-E-B, but another option for healthy food is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
My go-to spot for dinner with family or friends is Mama Margie’s. The relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and great food and drinks always make for a good time.
O.P. Schnabel Park, especially during the vibrant days of spring, holds nostalgic memories from a childhood spent playing there. Now I take my dogs for walks on the trails and enjoy a break from the city. Since my dogs are larger, having that open space to explore is key.
One thing I’m continuously impressed by is how San Antonio has expanded and connected its trail network over the years. Now you can bike continuously between different parks and points of interest in the city with plenty of shade for the hot summer months.
San Antonio has so much rich culture and history that residents celebrate and strive to preserve. At the same time, its growing population is bringing new cultural influences that add to the vibrancy. It’s especially exciting to see the fusion of Tex-Mex with other ethnic cuisines in really thoughtful and refreshing ways.
In my work as a real estate agent, I witness the continuous growth and transformation of not just my neighborhood but also my hometown. It has inspired me to explore and help others find more to love about San Antonio. People always ask me for recommendations on what to do in town, so I took on the role of unofficial tour guide and have been sharing tips on social media for getting out there and experiencing more of this great city. My work in social media and in real estate both share the goal of helping people find their niche in a city filled with diverse neighborhoods.
What I’ve seen as I work with homebuyers is that, since the pandemic, people are starting to understand their home habits more and looking for ways their homes can better accommodate their routines. I’m someone who loves being outside, so my home’s backyard and patio space are important to me. I also love making coffee and cooking at home, so having the right kitchen space matters to me. My mom and I also love hosting, from holiday family gatherings to barbecues and themed parties, we’re all about curating a vibe.
As the Northwest Side undergoes changes, particularly in highway construction, I see it as a promise of positive growth. While the traffic disruptions may be inconvenient for now, the investment in infrastructure signals the city’s belief in the potential of this area.

If the oddsmakers' predictions hold true, the near future looks bright for McNeese State. They and the Incarnate Word Cardinals will face off in a Southland battle at 5:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at The Legacy Center. McNeese State will be looking to keep their 14-game home win streak (dating back to last season) alive.
In what's become a running theme this season, McNeese State gave their fans yet another huge victory on Saturday. They claimed a resounding 74-47 victory over the Colonels on the road. Winning is a bit easier when your shooting is a whole 21.7% better than the opposition, as McNeese State's was.
Meanwhile, Incarnate Word fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Lions on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Lions 76-72. Incarnate Word has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
The Cowboys' victory bumped their record up to 23-3. As for the Cardinals, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-18 record this season.
Saturday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy match: McNeese State haven't given up the ball easily this season, having only averaged 9.9 turnovers per game. It's a different story for Incarnate Word, though, as they've been averaging 15.9 turnovers per game. Given McNeese State's sizable advantage in that area, the Cardinals will need to find a way to close that gap.
McNeese State was able to grind out a solid win over the Cardinals in their previous matchup back in January, winning 80-66. Does McNeese State have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cardinals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
McNeese State is a big 21.5-point favorite against Incarnate Word, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Cowboys as a 22-point favorite.
The over/under is 144.5 points.

North Texas is 8-2 against the Roadrunners since December of 2017, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Saturday. Both teams will face off in an American Athletic battle at 4:00 p.m. ET at The Super Pit. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

The losing side was boosted by Jason Edwards, who scored 29 points. Another player making a difference was Robert Allen, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, UTSA's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their seventh straight loss. They fell 66-61 to the Bulls.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Chandler Cuthrell, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Even though they lost, UTSA smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
The Mean Green's defeat dropped their record down to 14-11. As for the Roadrunners, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 11 of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-19 record this season.
Going forward, North Texas is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 13.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 7-4 against the spread when playing at home.
North Texas didn't have too much breathing room in their game against the Roadrunners in their previous meeting back in January of 2023, but they still walked away with a 63-59 victory. Will North Texas repeat their success, or do the Roadrunners have a better game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.

The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, standing at 8-19 overall and 2-12 in the American Athletic Conference, face a pivotal moment in their season. Despite their struggles, UTSA has showcased moments of brilliance, led by Jordan Ivy-Curry, who averages 16.5 points per game. The Roadrunners' offensive firepower, with 78.1 points per game, contrasts sharply with their defensive challenges, conceding an average of 82.8 points. This gap highlights a team with potential hampered by inconsistency. The Roadrunners' 41.0% field goal shooting and 33.1% from beyond the arc, coupled with a commendable rebounding effort led by Carlton Linguard Jr. with 6.1 rebounds per game, underscore a team that battles hard on the boards.
Defensively, UTSA must tighten up, as their opponents have found too much comfort shooting 45.4% from the field and a staggering 37.6% from 3-point range against them. Despite these challenges, UTSA's resilience is evident in their ability to stay competitive in games, as reflected in their recent performances and the leadership from players like Christian Tucker, who not only leads in assists but also contributes significantly in steals. As they prepare to face North Texas, the Roadrunners will need to leverage their offensive capabilities while finding ways to shore up their defense, making this matchup a critical test of their ability to overcome adversity and improve their standing within the conference.
