Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in San Antonio, TX So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

QUOTE REQUEST

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

SAN ANTONIO — Five planets will be visible for San Antonians to see as March comes to an end. According to space.com, the best time to see all planets align will be Monday, March 28, however viewing this planetary parade will not be easy for San Antonians due to sky conditions and location of some planets falling close to the horizon.

Even if sky conditions are perfect and all five planets of Mercury, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Uranus and moon with the naked eye can be viewed, congratulate yourself if all five are spotted. This is because a couple planets in particular will be tough to view that fall close to the horizon.

1. Keep an eye on the weather - Luckily the five planets will be visible from March 25 - 30 because cloudy skies could obscure viewing conditions beginning Monday morning in San Antonio. Since rain chances will continue Friday morning San Antonians could catch a first glimpse of the planetary parade at dusk Friday evening.

Saturday San Antonio should also see clear skies providing the best and likely only chance to see the planets before clouds roll back in Sunday. Keeping Saturday evening in mind, San Antonians will want to venture out around dusk (the time between sunset and darkness) leaving just enough light to see all the planets, despite how close they fall to the horizon.

Mercury will be that first planet that could be obscured by leftover sunlight. And if you're having trouble finding it look for Jupiter as they will look like two bright objects near the horizon. Binoculars could also help spot these two planets before getting your eyes to adjust.

Credit: KENS 5 Weather

2. Planets location - Since the planets will be visible near the horizon look toward the western skies. If you can see sunset then you're in good shape.

Also keep your view clear of any buildings or trees that could obscure your view of the horizon. Of course, the further away you are from city lights the better.

Viewing time is also very short, San Antonians will have about 30 minutes after sunset to spot the five planets before night skies take over.

3. What will the planets look like? - The planets will align beginning at the horizon as Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, moon and finally Mars. According to space.com the easiest planet to see will be Venus also called the "Evening Star". The planet Uranus will be located above Venus.

The crescent moon will also appear in line with the planets with Mars sitting above shining as a yellowish-orange star.

Then Jupiter and Mercury will be the most difficult to spot as they sit close to the horizon.

Some of the planets will still be visible at night just look toward the crescent moon as your guide.

San Antonio's new Chicken Salad Chick offers 12 different chicken salads

Chicken salad recipes go back further than most people realize, with recipes etched in time as far back at the 1800s. Flash forward to the present, and the Southern dish has become the center of a chain of restaurants marketed under the name Chicken Salad Chick.

San Antonio got its first Chicken Salad Chick in February with the opening of a location in the Stone Oak area. The chicken salad craze officially erupted across the city as a second spot followed suit on March 8 near Westover Hills. Okay, so maybe not a craze, but a fascination has definitely been brewing toward the new-to-town chain, so I decided to find out what the cluck was going on.

What's it like inside?

I dropped into the Westover Hills Chicken Salad Chick for lunch earlier this week, and the first thing that struck me was the color scheme. Pastel shades of green colored the walls with wacky geometric and floral table cloths, giving a sense of subtle playfulness. It has a certain country boutique aesthetic that probably only connects if you went to East Central High School (as I did).

Anyway, Chicken Salad Chick is clean, bright, and easy to order from, with quick counter service and friendly staff who are more than willing to help you choose from the substantial chicken salad menu. The chain also serves pimento cheese, and sandwiches, and non-chicken salads, in case you were curious.

How many chicken salads does Chicken Salad Chick have?

There are at least 12 options when I went in to Chicken Salad Chick, all of which were broken down into four different flavor categories: traditional, spicy, savory, and fruity/nutty. The chicken salad is served by the scoop (like ice cream) atop a lettuce leaf or in the form of a sandwich.

How much is the chicken salad?

More for you

I ended up ordering The Chick, a meal deal that costs $9.19. It came with a single scoop of chicken salad, a cup of soup, crackers, a pickle spear, and a pre-packaged cookie. For my scoop, I decided on the Jalapeño Holly because I like little spice. Oh yeah, the chicken salads are all named after women with elaborate backstories, and you can explore the Chicken Salad Chick lore on the restaurant's website.

The soup of the day when I visited was tortilla soup, which ended up being the highlight of my meal. I started to regret getting a scoop and not a sandwich about halfway into my chicken salad, because the crackers that came with my food were individually packaged and something of a hassle. But over all, the Jalapeño Holly proved decent, with enough spice for me to taste the jalapeños.

Again, I found myself more focused on the soup, which came hot, cheesy and full of flavor. Even though The Chick meal combo did not include a drink, I also enjoyed the sweet tea I picked out from the drink fountains, so much that I refilled my cup before leaving.

Are you a Chicken Salad Chick?

Overall, it's a fine place for lunch, but it's so specific that you have to have a hankering for chicken salad and only chicken salad to really feel compelled to go there. In that case, you might just be a Chicken Salad Chick yourself, and lucky for you, there's two San Antonio locations to satisfy those needs.

New restaurants are popping up every other day in San Antonio, and without a guide, it can be difficult to parse through all the fluff to find the cream of the culinary crop. That's why MySA decided to pull together a list of this season's best new restaurants in San Antonio's to try right now.

When considering best new restaurants, the food is ultimately the deciding factor, while service, decor, ambiance, and approach are additional guidelines we use to evaluate the quality of an eatery. For the purposes of this list, we included restaurants, bars, or pop-ups that have been established within the last six months and have made an impact on the city's diverse dining scene.

Beacon Hill Market & Deli

San Antonio has room in its heart (and stomach) for two new sandwich joints (three if you count Zito's latest opening). Though our first entry is still only servicing its counter Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or sell out, Beacon Hill Market & Deli is right at home on Blanco Road. Get there early for your pick of East Coast-style sandwiches (note: they do in fact sell out so heed our advice!). In puro San Antonio fashion the cheesesteak ditches Cheez Whiz for Rico's, while the pastrami Reuben is every bit as deliciously messy as it should be. Highlights include the classic Italian hoagie, a masterful blend of ham, salami, capicolla, provolone, mayo and dressing; and the classic turkey hoagie. Whichever sandwich or hoagie you order, pair it with the hot pepper relish for an extra kick.

Find it: 1717 Blanco Road, San Antonio, TX 78212

Ladino

It’s hard not to gush over Ladino, but I’ll give it a try. When a restaurant group signs up to fill the void left by one of San Antonio’s premier Italian eateries (Il Sogno), they better bring it. And that’s what the team behind Austin's Emmer & Rye did. The space is a sleek and intimate at once. When it comes to the food, let the kitchen do the work for you and order the Mezas de Alegria (or Tables of Joy), and sit back as a parade of fluffy pita, velvety dips (the spicy feta!), bright salads, fried cheesy kefalotyri are offered up to you. Don’t skip the almond and olive oil cake, or for that matter any of the perfectly balanced desserts.

Leche de Tigre

A new addition to the Southtown neighborhood, ceviche restaurant Leche de Tigre has been serving up unique Peruvian fare and cocktails since it opened in February. The restaurant was cooked up by brothers Emil, Axel, and Alec Oliva and their cousin Sebastian Montante, who together drew from their shared Peruvian heritage to create the new concept. The lomo saltado — which features tenderloin, red onion, tomato, fried yellow potatoes, and scallions — is a standout dish, but, of course, variations of Leche de Tigre's namesake dish (a citrus-based, spicy marinade) and ceviche are not to be missed.

La Ruina

Former owners of The Modernist, Gerry Shirley and Olaf Harmel, are behind the creation of La Ruina, a cocktail bar with tropical offerings just east of San Antonio's downtown. To be blunt, La Ruina offers one of the best mojitos in the city, as well as a fantastic selection of hi-balls, agave cocktails, and rum-based drinks. The inside bar has plenty of stylish seating complete with colorful wall motifs, while the outdoor courtyard offers patio sipping and the occasional local food pop-up. La Ruina is a great place to start or end the night, with its fresh beverages, cool atmosphere, and even cooler bartenders.

Saha

When it comes to pop-ups, Saha is among the best the city has to offer and one of the few local concepts serving Palestinian cuisine with modern flair. While the menu rotates often, the chicken msakhan wrap and falafel sandwich are both tried and true options. Catch founder and chef Moureen Kaki and her passionate crew on weekends at wine bar Little Death, with a few more weeks left in the pop-up's residency, and keep an eye on Saha's Instagram for updates on when and where they'll be serving next.

Go Fish Market

The latest in a string of new restaurants from restaurateurs Em and Houston Carpenter, upscale seafood restaurant Go Fish Market opened near the Pearl in January. Go Fish has a small, curated menu with fresh starter options like shrimp cocktail, half shell oysters, and caviar, while mains at Go Fish include the more unique dishes like the ora king lox on sourdough or the fish lovers pizza. Also, the wine selections are just as enticing as the fresh seafood, so do yourself a favor and take a peek at their offerings. Like all Carpenter-owned restaurants the aesthetic is immaculate, with a soft pastel color scheme, minimalist decor, and plenty of natural light from the high windows.

Full Goods Diner

Brunch is a San Antonio pastime, and Full Goods Diner is a wonderful playing ground for fans of morning comfort foods. From the folks behind popular Austin restaurant Paperboy, Full Goods brings a little bit of that hip style to local flavors, like with the breakfast cheese enchiladas or the Texas hash — consisting of roasted pork shoulder, kale, sweet potatoes, onions, pecan mole, and a poached egg. If you like refreshing, boozy drinks to go with your meal, this restaurant has you covered, with espresso martinis, frozen palomas, and mimosas. Fulls Goods also serves a full espresso menu if you need an extra boost with brunch.

Find it: 200 E. Grayson St., Suite 120, San Antonio, TX 78215

The Wicked Wich

If you love sandwiches brimming with choice ingredients, The Wicked Wich in Beacon Hill is exactly the place to go. It got its start as a pop-up, and landed at a brick-and-mortar in February. This sandwich shop has a little something for everyone, from monster-sized meaty subs like The Beast to vegan options like the chickpea and sprout sandwich. The Wicked Wich also has rotating specialties that show off owner and chef Feliza Salazar's creative side, like the current offering: a berry, brie, and capicola grilled cheese on sourdough served with hot honey.

Find it: 825 Fredericksburg Road, Suite A, San Antonio, TX 78201

Restaurant Claudine

Last but not least on our list is another restaurant brought to San Antonio by the wife-and-husband duo Em and Houston Carpenter. Restaurant Claudine is named after the latter's own grandmother, while the menu is something of an ode to Southern cooking brought to life by chef Cassie Ramsey. The blue crab beignets are a must-try, while the hot chicken and waffles (with fermented hot honey, honey Cajun butter, and maple syrup) are an excellent take on the staple brunch dish. And I can't forget to touch on the beautiful interior, which is playfully designed with fun wallpaper patterns, vintage china, and a touch of mid-century modernity in the furniture and fixtures.

Behind the Kitchen Door: Health inspector uncovers dirty conditions inside strip club restaurant

SAN ANTONIO – Beijing Express in the 8000 block of Marbach Road on the West Side got a nearly failing score of 70 on its latest health inspection last month.

It was the latest in a long string of low scores, all of them in the 70s. You have to go all the way back to September 25, 2019, to find a score above 80. The business got an 82 on that inspection.

When the health inspector visited in February 2023, she found all kinds of violations, including eight repeats from a prior inspection.

According to the report, a worker was seen preparing raw beef on a prep table right next to cooked pork.

Another worker didn’t change their gloves or wash their hands after marinating raw beef. In fact, the inspector wrote she didn’t see any hand washing by employees during the nearly two-hour inspection. The business was cited for the same violation in October.

A black mold-like build-up in the ice machine was also a repeat violation.

Bleach and other chemicals were found stored next to buckets of soy sauce on the floor. The inspector also found food storage containers of soy sauce and fresh soup being kept on the floor throughout the business. That food was also uncovered.

On a positive note, the inspector made no mention of any pest problems. That’s an improvement from last October. During that inspection, there were “multiple dead roaches throughout the establishment,” and a back door was “left wide open.”

This time around, the inspector noted she found a side door left open.

KSAT Investigates reporter Tim Gerber stopped by the business this week to ask some questions.

When employees came outside, they told Gerber they didn’t know why their scores were so low or if anything had been done to correct the violations.

The inspector ordered a re-inspection to occur within 10 business days and told them to have all violations corrected.

We’ll let you know what they find.

79 or lower = C (Marginal to Poor)
